Ruxcon Panel 2008

The Ruxcon Panel is an informal discussion with participants from diverse fields sharing their opinions on current computer security issues. There are participants representing the media, law enforcement, vulnerability research, and the anti-virus industry.

The panel will be run in an informal and open manner. The audience was free to voice their opinions on subjects under discussion or pose a possible discussion topic to the panel members.

Capture the Flag

Ruxcon Capture the Flag is back for another year, sporting a new King of the Hill based format. Teams will work directly against each other to take and retain control of the Ruxcon CTF network.

The Ruxcon Capture the Flag competition is a fun purely offence event to let conference attendees enjoy breaking into a somewhat realistic and insecure network in any manner they choose; however the rewards will differ depending on the path taken. Tokens will be scattered across the entire CTF network which can all be handed in for points. They will all be easy to identify once you see them, however they will all need to be found after compromising a system, i.e. simply compromising the system will not get you the token, you must look around in the areas normally containing 'interesting' data to find whatever you can. The competition will run from 11 am on Saturday for the duration of the conference and finish at 5.30pm Sunday evening, however there will also be a 2 hour speed-hack round for anyone who wants to achieve infamy without needing to sacrifice their precious drinking time ;)

There are no particular levels, but the various systems that comprise the network will range in their difficulty to compromise.

To access the levels, participants will need to register at the LAN and plugin to the local network there. To isolate malicious traffic an stop /accidental/ attacks against other attendees the CTF will be separated from the main conference network. The tokens will be submitted to an automated server for credit towards an attacker.

Once the competition is closed staff will judge participant submissions and prizes will be awarded to those with the highest points!

Exploit Development Competition

The exploit development competition allows attendees to put their exploit development skills to the test. The vulnerable levels for the competition demonstrate a range of vulnerabilities from very simple to advanced.

The Ruxcon exploit development competition is a fun way for attendees to practice skills learnt during the conference, by auditing and exploiting several vulnerable programs. The competition will run for the duration of the conference and finish at 5.30pm Sunday evening. The levels will range in difficulty from easy to hard, so even beginners can participate!

Solutions to levels may be submitted to staff via the competition web server> Staff are looking for three main areas to be covered in a submission, being:

1. Exploit code
2. Description of the bug(s)
3. Solution / Patch

Once the competition is closed staff will judge participant submissions and prizes will be awarded to those with the highest points!

Ruxcon Quiz

The Ruxcon Quiz is a social event where attendees can participate in a hacker trivia competition. The competition will be in the bar area and will be run over a lunch break so everyone can enjoy a beverage while testing their IT knowledge, with the opportunity of winning some prizes.
